Layout and excavation is the first stage of our swimming pool installation process, and it sets the foundation for everything that follows. A fiberglass pool is only as good as the hole it sits in, so we treat this stage as carefully as the installation itself.
Designing the Pool Layout
Before any digging begins, our on-staff designers map out exactly where the pool will sit and how it relates to the rest of your property. We look at how the pool connects to an existing patio or deck, how you move through the yard, and where the sun and shade fall through the day. On properties without an existing outdoor living space, we design the whole area around the pool from the start, including the future paver deck, walkways, and seating.
This stage also accounts for the practical constraints that determine where a pool can go: property setbacks, easements, overhead and underground utilities, and the natural grade of the yard. Working these out on paper first prevents costly surprises once excavation is underway.
Preparing for Excavation
Once the layout is approved, we mark the dig and confirm the exact dimensions and depth of the pool shell. Sussex County's sandy, coastal soil behaves differently than heavier inland ground, so we plan the excavation and base accordingly to keep the shell stable and level for the long term.
The Excavation Process
Our crew excavates the site to the precise shape and depth of your pool, removes the spoil, and keeps the surrounding area protected. We then build and compact a level gravel base for the shell to rest on. This base is critical: it provides drainage beneath the pool and the stable, even footing that keeps a one-piece shell from shifting or settling over time. A poorly prepared base is the most common cause of long-term pool problems, which is exactly why we never rush this step.
